Michael Golrick (LA)
Michael joined the State Library of Louisiana in December 2008 as the State Data Coordinator and Library Consultant. In October 2009, he assumed additional duties as the Head of Reference. Prior to joining the State Library of Louisiana, Michael served for almost 25 years as a public library director, with a stint running a multi-type regional library cooperative. He has worked professionally in Arizona, Connecticut, Wisconsin, and Louisiana. He has been active in the American Library Association (including service on ALA Council (1997 – 2012) and the ALA Executive Board (2003 – 2006) and several of its divisions (ASCLA, RUSA, and PLA). He was on the Connecticut Library Association board, including service as CLA President in 1999-2000. He also served on the Wisconsin Association of Public Libraries (WAPL) board.
His undergraduate degree in Religious Studies is from Brown University. He has a Masters of Science in Library Science from the University of Illinois, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Arizona.
Statistics are valuable as a measuring tool. However, when thinking about the range of sizes of public libraries in the country, we need to keep in mind the ability to reasonably accurately collect the data and present it to our users. It is a challenging time for deciding what data is needed as some aspects of public library services are in a state of constant flux. I have the perspective of having be a part of the process on the data collection end as a public library director (medium and large-ish), as an SDC, and as a policy-decision maker/lobbyist in my library association activities. I hope that you value that experience and allow me to serve.
