Question
Kristen Stehel (UT)
Hi all,
Based on your most current state library data, what percentage of collection expenditures do your libraries spend on electronic materials/digital units?
In Utah, 2015 data shows 17% of collection expenditures spent on electronic materials/digital units.
• 17% on e-materials/ digital units
• 23% on other materials
• 60% on print materials
I would really appreciate anyone that could contribute to support my case study.
Thanks!

The FY13/14 numbers are slightly different but the percentage breakdown is exactly the same as FY14/15. I triple checked that!

Hi Kristen,
In Vermont we have a number of smaller libraries that don’t break their collection expenditures down into those three categories. Instead they report all of their collection expenditures as one lump sum (does anyone else have to deal with that?). In any event, I’m going to refer to those percentages as “Combined.” I suppose you might be able also call it “Other,” but figured you’d want to know what combined meant. Seeing that they’re often very small libraries that do this, it’s probably safe to say that very little (if any of it) goes to e-materials.
Here are the number for Vermont:

I could not separate print from CDs and DVDs. The accounting department uses the same object code for print, CDs and DVDs expenditures except for high demand DVDs. Those have their own object code.
With that in mind this is the percentage breakdown of materials expenditures for FY2013, FY2014, and FY2015 for Hawaii.
