Steering Committee Update

IMLS staff and members of the PLSC Steering Committee met in December to host the training session for new State Data Coordinators, and to begin work on the transition of the Library Statistics Program to the Institute of Museum and Library Services. We’re all moving forward with plans for the 2008 State Data Coordinators professional development conference, which will be held in early December in Washington, DC. We had some great sessions with an energetic group of new SDCs at the December 2007 conference and plans are underway for some innovative sessions at the 2008 conference.

A planning meeting is scheduled for March 17th at the IMLS offices. At this meeting we will work cooperatively to plan for the continued transition of programs and services. The focus on timely, quality data is shared by all parties, and I know we will have a process and procedures that ensure this outcome.

Steering Committee Update - March 2008

Some members of the PLSC Steering Committee attended a one-day transition planning meeting at the offices of IMLS. The invited group also included some state librarians and researchers.

Here's the purpose of this meeting, held March 17, 2008, as described by Mamie Bittner, Deputy Director, IMLS Office of Policy, Planning, Research and Communication:

"As IMLS takes responsibility for the surveys, this is a good time to take stock of where we are and where we’d like to go. These discussions will help to incorporate the statistics programs into IMLS’s overall strategic plan and future OMB budget submissions. As you can see from the agenda, we will be working together to identify the strategic challenges and opportunities facing the program in its new position here at IMLS."

Additionally, there is a meeting planned for the full Steering Committee in June, when the ongoing work of the sub-committees will resume. Plans are already underway for a great 2008 conference.

Part of Our History

The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science prepared a final report on the work of the Commission since it was established in 1970. The report is a great compilation of activities over the past 37 years:

How long will the NCLIS site be maintained?

Gerry...As far as I know, and it's not definitive information, is that the site will not be updated anymore. The IMLS site has started a Public Library Statistics section. (http://harvester.census.gov/imls/publib.asp)

Will we use PLSC with our FY 2008 statistics? The IMLS website still refers to FSCS, but Cynthia Ramsey is using PLSC in her e-mail messages.

I am currently reviewing Bibliostat Collect for 2008 and will need to request a global change if appropriate.

Thanks for your advice.

Holly, I'm not sure what you mean by "use PLSC" -- the name change is still in transition, but none of this should affect data submission. There are many places where FSCS still shows up -- for example, libraries have an FSCS ID number. But the data submission process (using WebPLUS) should not be affected by what actonym is used. Or have I misunderstood your question?

Steering Committee meeting & resignation

Hello all,

The full Steering Committee met in Washington last week, at IMLS offices. We had 2-1/2 days of lively discussion, and I think the efforts on everyone's part were well worth the time and energy. You will be hearing soon from Carlos Manjarrez, Associate Deputy Director for Research and Statistics at IMLS, about the December conference and other data-related activities.

On another note, I have resigned from the Steering Committee, effective June 13, since that will be my last day on the job at the Nebraska Library Commission. This data part of my job will be the one I will miss the most. And I hope to be able to keep in touch with you all in my new job. It's been an honor working with you!
